
MN Sarma
Mr Nagaraja Sarma Maddipatla, in short, Mr M N Sarma, is a Postgraduate in Economics, Graduate of Laws and an Associate Member of The Insurance Institute of India (III). He joined the non-life insurance industry as a Direct Recruit Officer in 1982 at New India Assurance Co Ltd. He worked in almost all areas of non-life insurance and in various capacities that include, Deputy Manager, Regional Manager, Chief Regional Manager, Deputy General Manager in-charge of ROs, GM (Investments), IT, Marine (Cargo), Hull, Aviation, Oil & Energy, Board Secretariet, etc.
He served as Resident Manager of New India in Curacao (Dutch Caribbean) for 4-1/2 years. He headed Kenindia Assurance Co Ltd., a composite insurance company in Nairobi, Kenya as its MD & CEO for about 2-1/2 years during which time he was also the Chairman of Tanzindia Assurance Co Ltd., Dar-es-Salaam.
He was also MD & CEO of Health Insurance Third Party Administrator (HITPA), the public sector companies owned TPA and it is in Mr Sarma’s tenure the HITPA became fully operational and started commercial operations.
Mr Sarma eventually retired as the Chairman-cum-Managing Director of United India Insurance Co Ltd., the 2nd largest non-life insurance company in India, in May 2018.
Mr Sarma is currently the Secretary General of General Insurance Council, a statutory body established under Insurance Act, 1938, and is based at Mumbai. The GI Council represents the entire non-life insurance industry of India comprising of 25 multiline non-life insurers of public and private sector, 5 standalone health insurance companies, 11 Reinsurance companies and two specialized insurers, i.e. ECGC and Agriculture Insurance Company of India.
Mr Sarma was on the Board of several companies as Director and also on several Committees and the Governing Boards of National Insurance Academy and Insurance Institute of India during different periods.
